Indiana homeowners and renters affected by the August 2026 storms have until Sunday, October 25, 2026, to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance. Indiana's Department of Homeland Security says eligible residents should apply by the end of that day. Applications cover designated counties, including Cass, Pike and Putnam, which were added September 25.
Quick Summary
- Deadline: October 25, 2026.
- Apply by phone: 800-621-3362.
- Online: DisasterAssistance.gov.
- Who this concerns: Homeowners and renters with eligible uninsured disaster losses or emergency needs from the August storms.
Which Indiana counties are included?
The state lists 24 counties: Carroll, Cass, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Pike, Porter, Pulaski, Putnam, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, Union and Wayne. The covered losses include uninsured damage to a primary home, personal property losses and disaster-related emergency needs.
How to apply before the deadline
Call 800-621-3362 to apply or use the official online portal. During our October 25 verification in Korea, DisasterAssistance.gov displayed a temporary service-unavailable notice and directed applicants to the same FEMA Helpline. That observation does not establish how long the interruption will last. If you see that notice, use the phone option rather than relying on the website becoming available before the deadline.
When the portal is available, FEMA's survivor guide directs new applicants to select Apply Now and complete the initial registration screens. It explains the Login.gov sign-in or account-creation steps. For an existing application, use Check Status to access your account.
What if you have insurance?
Putnam County EMA advises residents to file an insurance claim and apply for FEMA assistance. FEMA cannot pay expenses already covered by insurance. Submit your settlement or denial information once you receive it. If your insurance claim has remained unsettled for more than 30 days, call FEMA about the delay.
Assistance can address eligible serious needs, temporary housing, basic home repairs and personal property losses. An application does not guarantee a payment; FEMA determines the eligible assistance for the household.
Documents and follow-up after applying
Read your FEMA letter for the specific evidence requested. Examples listed by Putnam County include insurance settlement or denial information, proof that the damaged home was your primary residence and proof of ownership. Keep your FEMA application number and the disaster number DR-4933-IN with your records.
FEMA's online guide says to open the relevant application and review Your Next Steps for missing documents. Use the account's Upload Center; the guide accepts document images or PDF files, not Word documents. Check the upload confirmation and Upload History. A submitted document can appear in upload history before it reaches FEMA's internal processing system.
Answer or return inspection calls: the caller's number can be from outside Indiana. If an eligibility letter requests additional information, respond to that request rather than assuming the application is permanently closed.
